Bevels on all four edges (4V) frame each block and help the geometry stand out. In 18\/4mm terms, 18mm is how thick the whole block is and 4mm is the depth of real oak on its face. A 4mm top layer leaves a good depth of oak for sanding and refinishing later on. Because the plies run in alternating directions, the blocks move far less than solid timber as the heating comes on and the seasons change.
