Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between chevron and herringbone flooring?

Chevron boards have angled ends that meet point-to-point, creating a continuous V-shaped pattern. Herringbone uses rectangular boards laid at right angles in an offset zigzag. Chevron therefore creates a cleaner, more directional ‘arrow’ appearance.

What does 45° chevron flooring mean?

With 45° chevron flooring, each board end is cut at a 45-degree angle. Matching left and right hand boards meet to create the characteristic continuous V. Other chevron angles exist, so always check the individual board format before ordering.

Which is better: engineered wood, solid wood or LVT chevron flooring?

There is no universal best option: Engineered wood provides a real-wood surface with greater dimensional stability. Solid wood is genuine timber throughout, but can react negatively towards excessive moisture and humidity. Glue-down LVT is thinner, water-resistant and easy to maintain, but requires particularly thorough subfloor preparation/installation.

Does chevron flooring need ‘left’ and ‘right’ hand boards?

Yes. This unique style is formed using corresponding left and right hand boards, allowing the angled ends to meet correctly and maintain the V-shaped pattern. Check the pack configuration before ordering, as the required quantities and packaging system can vary between products.

How is chevron flooring installed?

Installation depends on the construction. Glue-down LVT is bonded directly to a prepared subfloor, while engineered and solid wood chevron are commonly fully bonded using a suitable flexible wood-floor adhesive. Accurate centre lines, setting-out and alignment are essential. Chevron is considerably less forgiving of installation errors than straight-plank flooring.

How important is subfloor preparation for chevron flooring?

Extremely important. The subfloor should be flat, smooth, dry, clean and structurally sound.

Glue-down LVT requires an especially smooth surface because imperfections can telegraph through the thin flooring. Timber installations also require appropriate moisture testing and preparation before bonding. Small subfloor errors can become increasingly visible as the chevron pattern progresses across the room.

How much extra chevron flooring should I allow for wastage?

We generally recommend allowing 10 – 15% extra for cuts, alignment and wastage. Irregular rooms, borders, multiple transitions or particularly detailed layouts may require more. Use our Flooring Calculator as a starting estimate and have complex projects confirmed by your fitter.

Can chevron flooring be used with underfloor heating?

All of our engineered wood and LVT chevron floors are compatible with underfloor heating, subject to the individual product specifications and permitted temperature limits.

Can chevron flooring be used in kitchens and open-plan spaces?

Yes. Engineered wood and LVT chevron flooring are particularly well suited to many kitchens and open-plan kitchen/dining spaces. Solid wood can also be used in suitable kitchens, but is less forgiving of repeated moisture, spillages and humidity changes. LVT is generally the more practical option where water and moisture resistance is a priority.

How much does chevron flooring cost, and is it more expensive to fit?

Chevron flooring prices vary by material, board specification, finish and construction. LVT generally sits at the more accessible end, followed by engineered wood and premium solid timber options.

Fitting can cost more than straight-plank flooring because chevron requires precise setting-out, alignment, additional cutting and more installation time. Also factor in subfloor preparation, adhesive, wastage and fitting when comparing the true project cost.

Which Chevron Flooring Is Right for Your Project?

Start with the room and the visual effect you want, then compare product construction, colour and board format. The table directs you to the most relevant collection, while each product page provides the dimensions, finish, pack coverage, room suitability and fitting details needed to choose.

Category Best suited to Key point
Oak chevron flooring Natural and versatile colour schemes Check timber construction, grade, finish and board dimensions

Dark chevron flooring High-contrast, design-led spaces Use room size and daylight to judge the overall effect
White chevron flooring Pale and Scandinavian-inspired schemes Check grain visibility and finish rather than colour name alone
Chevron flooring for kitchens Suitable pattern-led kitchen projects Product construction and room guidance must match the conditions
Chevron flooring for living rooms Feature floors in social spaces Board scale and direction can change how the room feels

When construction is the main decision, compare engineered chevron flooring with solid wood chevron flooring. If the preferred look is a staggered zigzag rather than a continuous V, read our guide to chevron flooring and herringbone flooring.

Plan Your Chevron Flooring with Precision

Chevron 45° flooring uses angled boards that meet point-to-point to create a continuous V-shaped pattern. The strong central lines make accurate setting-out particularly important, so consider the main sightline, centre line and direction of the pattern before ordering.

When comparing products, check:

  • Engineered wood, solid wood or glue-down LVT construction
  • Board length, width, thickness and chevron format
  • Supplied in ‘Left ‘ and ‘right’ hand boards
  • Oak grade and finish, or LVT wear layer and surface specification
  • Pack coverage and recommended wastage
  • Subfloor preparation and installation method
  • Room and underfloor-heating suitability
  • Warranty and maintenance requirements

For chevron and more complex room layouts, we recommend allowing around 10–15% extra for cuts and wastage, with particularly intricate layouts potentially requiring more.

A complimentary sample is ideal for judging colour, grain, texture and finish, but the board dimensions and room imagery give a better indication of the finished pattern scale. For open-plan spaces, hallways or connected rooms, careful planning helps maintain symmetry and avoid awkward cuts or transitions.

Chevron Flooring Prices & Cost per m²

Our chevron flooring prices are shown per m², with flooring supplied in complete packs. As a current guide, glue-down LVT chevron starts from around £29.99/m², engineered wood chevron from £44.99/m² and solid wood chevron from £54.99/m².

When comparing chevron flooring prices, look beyond the headline cost per m². Consider the material, board specification, pack coverage, subfloor preparation, adhesive or fixing system and professional fitting required for the complete installation.

Use our Flooring Calculator to estimate how much flooring you need and allow around 10–15% extra for cuts and wastage. More intricate layouts, borders and irregular rooms may require a higher allowance.

Chevron generally requires more precise setting-out and fitting than straight-plank flooring, so installation cost can vary by material and room complexity. Glue-down LVT may require extensive subfloor preparation, while engineered and solid wood have their own bonding, preparation and fitting requirements.
