Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between LVT and SPC flooring?

LVT is the broader luxury vinyl flooring category. SPC is a rigid-core type of LVT, usually installed using a click-lock system. Traditional glue-down LVT is thinner and more flexible, while SPC is thicker, more rigid and generally quicker to install (DIY friendly).

Is LVT and SPC flooring waterproof?

Many LVT and SPC products are classed as waterproof, making them suitable for areas where spills and moisture are expected. However, waterproof flooring does not automatically create a waterproof floor system, so always check the individual product and installation guidance.

What is better: click SPC or glue-down LVT?

Neither is universally better. Click SPC is generally quicker and less labour-intensive to install, and all of our click SPC flooring have built-in underlay. Glue-down LVT provides a low-profile, directly bonded finish but requires more careful subfloor preparation and adhesive.

Can LVT and SPC flooring be used with underfloor heating?

Many LVT and SPC floors are suitable for underfloor heating, but compatibility and maximum temperature vary by product. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications before installation; many systems specify a maximum floor temperature of around 27°C.

Can LVT flooring be used in kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes, many LVT and SPC products are well suited to kitchens and bathrooms because of their resistance to water and everyday spills. Check the individual room-suitability guidance, particularly for wet rooms or areas exposed to standing water.

Does the subfloor need to be level for LVT or SPC flooring?

More accurately, the subfloor needs to be flat, smooth, dry, clean and structurally sound. This is critical with thin glue-down LVT, where even small imperfections can show through the finished floor. SPC is more forgiving, but still requires a properly prepared subfloor within the manufacturer’s tolerances.

Does LVT or SPC flooring need underlay?

Glue-down LVT does not normally use traditional flooring underlay and is bonded directly to a prepared subfloor. All click SPC flooring in our range include built-in underlay, so an additional layer is generally not required unless specifically stated by the manufacturer.

What thickness and wear layer should I choose for LVT flooring?

Do not judge durability by overall thickness alone. The wear layer protects the decorative surface and is a more useful indicator of expected use. Around 0.3mm is common for domestic flooring, while 0.5 – 0.55mm and above is often specified for heavier residential or commercial use.

How much does LVT flooring cost per m²?

LVT and SPC prices vary according to construction, wear layer, thickness, design, finish and installation system. Compare the price per m² alongside pack coverage and the expected installation cost; glue-down LVT may require additional adhesive, smoothing compounds and a slightly longer fitting time.

How much LVT or SPC flooring do I need?

Measure the total floor area and add an allowance for cuts and wastage. Around 5% is sensible for straightforward layouts, while 10 – 15% should generally be considered for herringbone, chevron and more complex room layouts. Use our Flooring Calculator as a starting estimate and confirm unusual layouts with your fitter.

Which Luxury Vinyl Flooring Is Right for Your Project?

Start with how the room will be used, then choose the preferred layout and installation method. The table directs you to the most relevant collection, while the product specification confirms construction, thickness, room suitability and installation requirements.

Category Best suited to Key point
Luxury vinyl plank flooring Straight wood-effect layouts Check click or glue-down method, thickness and wear specification
Herringbone vinyl flooring Patterned wood-effect rooms Check board format, installation system and layout allowance
Tile-effect luxury vinyl flooring Stone or tile-inspired interiors A practical visual alternative where the product suits the room
Waterproof luxury vinyl flooring Products specifically classified for wet-area use Confirm the exact waterproof claim and installation conditions
Luxury vinyl flooring for kitchens Busy food-preparation and dining spaces Prioritise spill resistance, cleaning guidance and subfloor preparation
Luxury vinyl flooring for bathrooms Selected moisture-prone room projects Use only products whose specification approves bathroom installation

If rigid construction is important, read what rigid core means in vinyl flooring before choosing an SPC product. Keep the selected manufacturer’s instructions as the final authority.

LVT vs SPC: Click or Glue-Down Flooring?

Choosing between LVT and SPC flooring depends on the room, subfloor and installation method.

Glue-down LVT is thinner and bonded directly to the subfloor, while SPC flooring has a rigid core and is commonly fitted using a DIY friendly click-lock system.

Before choosing, check:

  • Click or glue-down installation
  • LVT or rigid-core SPC construction
  • Thickness and wear layer
  • Subfloor condition and preparation
  • Underlay or built-in backing
  • Room and underfloor heating suitability

Subfloor Preparation Matters

Because luxury vinyl flooring is relatively thin, the subfloor needs to be smooth, flat, dry and properly prepared.

This is especially important with glue-down LVT, where bumps, joints or uneven areas can show through the finished floor. SPC is more forgiving, but still needs a suitable, level subfloor.

The right choice depends on your subfloor, room and installation requirements.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring Prices & Cost per m²

Our luxury vinyl flooring prices are shown per m², with LVT and SPC supplied in complete packs. When comparing prices, consider the wear layer, thickness, installation method, warranty and pack coverage.

Use our Flooring Calculator to estimate how much you need, allowing extra for cuts and wastage. For herringbone, chevron and complex room layouts, allow approximately 10 – 15% extra, depending on the product and layout.

Also consider the full installation cost. Glue-down LVT may require more extensive subfloor preparation, adhesive and additional fitting time, while our click SPC flooring includes built-in underlay and is generally quicker and less labour-intensive to install.

Compare the full specification and expected fitting cost rather than the price per m² alone. Current LVT and SPC sale prices, offers and stock availability are shown on each product page.
