Floor types

Floors for London homes

Flats, terraces and period conversions each raise their own questions – about noise, heating and what's under the floor. Here's where each type fits.

  • Engineered wood flooring in London

Engineered oak's layered core stays stable over underfloor heating, which suits a kitchen extension or a refurbished flat. Check the product page, or browse floors for underfloor heating.
    • Real oak top layer
    • Suits underfloor heating
    Shop engineered wood

  • Laminate flooring in London

Live in a flat? Check your lease before choosing a hard floor, as many set rules on sound insulation. Read can I have laminate flooring in a flat.
    • AC4 and AC5 ratings
    • Scratch-resistant
    Shop laminate

  • Solid wood flooring in London

Solid oak suits a dry, stable room – often upstairs in a period house – and can be sanded back over the years. Over underfloor heating, engineered is usually the safer choice.
    • Solid timber
    • Can be re-sanded
    Shop solid wood

  • Herringbone, parquet & chevron in London

Pattern floors suit a period room with tall ceilings as well as a modern open-plan space. Compare parquet & herringbone with chevron, and allow more for cuts than with straight planks.
    • Herringbone
    • Chevron
    Shop parquet & herringbone

  • Luxury vinyl (LVT) flooring in London

Waterproof LVT is a practical pick for bathrooms and galley kitchens. Glue-down LVT is thin, which helps where door clearances are tight.
    • Water-resistant
    • Glue-down or click
    Shop luxury vinyl

Buying flooring online for a London home

We sell flooring online and deliver it across London, so the choosing happens in your own home. Order free samples and look at them next to your walls and joinery. Every floor shows its price per m² online as well as its pack price, so comparing is simple. Under our best price promise, if you find the identical floor cheaper at another UK retailer, send us their quote and we'll match it once it's checked (sale and clearance items, delivery and fitting costs aren't included).

Want help with quantities, underlay or adhesive? Book a free callback consultation or call 0121 274 8575. The team behind Flooring Surgeons has more than 30 years in the flooring trade and will happily talk it through with you and your fitter.

Fitting: bring your own fitter

We don't fit floors in London. Our fitting team covers the West Midlands and nearby towns only, so London customers use their own fitter. Before you order, ask your fitter about:

  • the subfloor – concrete, timber joists or a mix of both, and whether it's level
  • sound rules in your lease, if you live in a flat, and an underlay that meets them – see acoustic flooring solutions and our underlay range
  • underfloor heating, and whether the floor should float or be glued
  • where the packs will be stored until fitting day

Delivery across London

Flooring reaches London on a pallet and is left at the kerb, Monday to Friday. Order by 2pm – it's usually available for delivery from 3 working days after your order, or pick a later date up to 8 weeks ahead in the basket – handy while you wait for a fitter. In a flat or an upstairs conversion, line up help to carry the packs inside. Measure with our measuring guide and add about 10% for cuts; every charge is on our delivery page.
