Basalt Oak 12mm Laminate

Named after the volcanic stone, Basalt Oak is a light grey take on oak in our Cambridge laminate range. It is a 12mm, AC5-rated plank that gives a cool, modern floor while still showing the grain of timber.

Look and character

The tone is a soft, light grey rather than a deep charcoal, so the floor feels fresh without going cold. Oak-style grain runs along each board, and the textured and embossed surface adds a little depth you notice when light rakes across the room. Grey floors are easy to live with: they sit well with white kitchens, painted cabinets, chrome or black handles and cool blue or green walls. It also pairs neatly with grey sofas and concrete-look worktops if you like a pared-back, contemporary scheme.

Construction and specification

A 12mm thickness means more substance than an entry-level laminate: the planks feel solid underfoot and bridge small dips in the subfloor better. One pack covers 1.35 m². A 4V bevel runs along all four edges of every plank, giving each one a defined outline, as a wooden floor would have. The AC5 rating is the top of the usual laminate scale and means the surface is built to cope with heavy foot traffic, so hallways and busy family rooms are well within its range. Each plank is 188mm wide and 1195mm long, a classic proportion that reads as a traditional boarded floor.

Where it works

Suitable rooms include living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, conservatories, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. In a kitchen, wipe up spills and standing water promptly, as you would with any laminate. For stairs, pair it with laminate stair nosing so the edge of every step is protected. Fitting and underfloor heating

Fitting uses a click system, with the finished floor laid floating over an underlay. Lay it over a suitable flooring underlay, which smooths out small bumps and softens footfall noise. Remember to add around 10% to the measured area to cover cuts and waste. You can lay it over underfloor heating, which is suitable for this floor; browse more flooring for underfloor heating.
