Frequently Asked Questions

What is herringbone flooring?

Herringbone is a parquet pattern of rectangular blocks laid at right angles, so the end of one block meets the side of the next. The result is a broken zigzag that resembles the bones of a fish, which gives the pattern its name. It has been used in grand houses for centuries and remains one of the most popular patterned floors.

Which way should herringbone run?

Most people run the zigzag along the longest dimension of the room, which draws the eye through the space and makes it feel longer. In a hallway, this is almost always the best choice. In a square room, point it towards the main entrance or a focal point such as a window or fireplace.

How much extra should I order for a pattern floor?

Add 10% to the measured area for cuts and waste, as the calculator does. Every row ends in an angled cut at the wall, and those offcuts are rarely reusable. Versailles panels also need extra for perimeter cuts. Rooms with many corners or doorways may need a little more.

Is herringbone flooring more expensive?

Herringbone usually costs more to install than planks, because it takes longer to lay and produces more waste. The material price depends on what it is made from: laminate and vinyl are the most affordable, engineered oak sits in the middle and solid oak is the premium choice.

Does herringbone suit a small room?

Yes. The diagonal lines lead the eye across the floor, which can make a small room or narrow hallway feel wider. Choose a lighter colour and a slightly longer block to keep the pattern calm, and point the zigzag along the room's longest dimension.

Choosing a herringbone floor

Herringbone is by far our largest pattern. Blocks run from 70mm to 150mm wide and from 300mm to 750mm long. Narrow blocks give a tight, traditional pattern with a lot of movement; wide, long blocks give a bolder, more contemporary floor with fewer joints.

Start with the material. Engineered oak is the largest group, with real timber on a stable base and top layers up to 6mm. Luxury vinyl comes next: click LVT floats and suits DIY, while glue-down LVT is thin, stable and ideal for large or commercial spaces. Laminate herringbone is 12mm and hard-wearing, and there is a small set of solid oak blocks.

Then think about the room. Waterproof vinyl belongs in bathrooms and wet kitchens. Real wood brings warmth and can be refinished. Laminate offers durability at an accessible price. Most of the collection is confirmed for underfloor heating.

Herringbone blocks come in left and right versions that are laid in pairs. Set out from a centre line and allow 10% extra for waste, since every row ends in an angled cut. 3 large samples are free when you sign in (extras are 99p each, up to 12 per order).

Narrow blocks look traditional. Wide, long blocks look modern.
